A lil late but whatever.

1990-03-22

I believe any 80s lovers should check this show out. Its full of some excellent playing.

While the setlist isnt necessarily what dreams are made of, nearly everything is spot on.

Its got a killer stranger, west LA. An easy to love you, which, if you can stand the song, is really a great performance. The BIODTL is smokin! with a perfect 12 beat intro. Sweet picasso moon and last time.

The second set has one of the late 80's best performances of scarlet > fire which can be found on the so many roads box set. The believe it or not is awesome.

THE OTHER ONE! a killer other one from the 90's!?! you got it. THis one is possibly the best I've heard from this era. Only 1985-11-08 competes with it IMO, but i havent heard them all, at any rate, unlike most 80s TOO's, it doesnt disappoint. Then a pretty solid hey jude dear mr fantasy which gets topped off by a really superb sugar mag, even the sunshine daydream is enjoyable and not too overdone/repetitive. Then the closing its all over now baby blue is muy bueno, my all time favorite version.

Hope you check it out, you'd do well to.

Haven't given this one a spin in a few years, but my notes have the Scarlet>Fire rated as "top 2 Brent-era." I'll give this a listen later and see if I still feel the same. I remember really enjoying this show.

Well I wasn't quite as impressed with the Scarlet > Fire as I remember being last time I heard it, but it's still a phenomenal rendition. I gave another listen to my favorite version, and I still can't find any others I enjoy as much as this:

ill give it a peep. I also dont find it as a best ever, but i dont know of any from 85-95 that are as good.

I think my favorite version is DP 18. The transition jam is just divine, its like an epic dark star but with a different vibe.

Interesting. DP 18 was my favorite version for a few years until I stumbled upon my above rec. I prefer the intensity of the early '80s versions. While the DP 18 one is lovely, and the transition jam doesn't meander around aimlessly like a lot of others from that era, it doesn't hold my attention as much as those tight jerry licks do. I think you'll like it.

yea i enjoyed it. Jerry definitely has some great moments along with the rest of the boys, also enjoyed the samson after. It definitely isnt gonna replace DP 18 for me, or Dp 13, but i need a few more listens. I dont think you can really say until you know both versions well enough. I hate how subjective music is...

I've been meaning to dive into 80-82 more. I know theres a fuckload of great music during that era that I just havent heard. Someday ill get around to it.

I listened to this show earlier this week, I enjoyed the scarlet> fire but the rest of the show didnt do it for me at all, I only gave it one listen though. Just generally not a Brent fan, his keyboards and especially his vocals, it just ruins it for me. I have a feeling one of the shows from this run may be a future Dave's Pick, possibly this show.

Most may enjoy the Miller version of this show....

i hear ya, its too bad so many are put off by brent. I really enjoy him as a back up vocal and I think his key work is superb, sometimes the sounds aren't that great...

check out the other one again, a lil slow to start but there is some really excellent playing by the boys.

I personally prefer the source I listed, Its the same as what is on nugs.net, which where I originally found the show.
